The Asif Jahi's of erstwhile Hyderabad Deccan have always been pioneers in establishing various institutions like Osmania General Hospital and Medical College, Fever Hospital, Nizamia Tibbi College at Charminar, Victoria Zanana Hospital presently known as Government Maternity Hospital, Nizam Orthopedic Hospital which has been converted to Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) and many Educational establishments were setup by the Royal Family.

Her Highness Princess Durru Shehvar, Princess of Berar (Daughter in Law of Nizam VII of the State of Hyderabad) laid the foundation stone for Princess Durru Shehvar Children's and General Hospital . It was established in the year 1989 with the mission to provide Quality Medical Care to pre and post natal care to pregnant women and medical care facilities to children and later expanded its services to the General Specialties. The hospital is a Non-Government and Non-Profit organization. To provide affordable Health care to General Public the charges for medical services are markedly subsidized making them affordable & accessible to all sections of the society without any compromise on Quality of Treatment . The Hospital is run by the “Princess Durru Shehvar Children's Medical Aid Society”. It is spread over an area of 11,300 square yards with ample space for different facilities. It has 200 bed capacity and it is a full fledged modern Hospital for advance treatment in Paediatrics, Paediatric Surgery, Reproductive Health , Internal Medicine, Cardiology , General Surgery Orthopaedic and Fracture treatment, Physiotheraphy, Fracture treatment, Physiotheraphy, Dental Surgery, E.N.T, Ophthalmology, etc. Through conscious efforts the Hospital Board has brought radical changes in Management, consequent upon re-organization, the Hospital has undergone a turnaround in its outlook. Under the new management the Hospital's objective is to achieve all round improvement in all its services. As a result it is upgrading its Pediatric Department with the introduction of 8 bedded Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in addition to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) equipped with Neonatal Ventilators, Photo therapy units and Centralized Cardiac Monitors it is one of the highly equipped and sophisticated NICU in the city with over 70 Nursing & Maternity Homes in and around the city referring Neonates with complications.

The Paediatric unit is managed by highly qualified consultants with specialized training in Paediatric Pulmonology and Cardiology; qualified Paediatricians are available round the clock for all Paediatric emergencies. The Paediatric surgical unit is attached to this department by an experienced Paediatric Surgeon.

The hospital has appointed Dr. Iqbal Jehan Professor Gynaecology & Obstetrics as HOD Department of Reproductive Health apart from Dr. Shabnam Raza & Dr. Qutub Unnisa. The Department is completely equipped to provide comprehensive Maternity services with critical case for high-risk pregnancies attached with 10 bedded Labour room. The Department provides excellent pre-natal delivery and postnatal care. Facilities for treating all major and minor gynecological procedures are undertaken. It also provides treatment for childless, Menopause, adolescent problems. For complete privacy of women patients hospital has a 30 bedded Female General Ward. Hospital has announced a Normal Delivery package of Rs. 1200/-.
